Lake Michigan, the second largest Great Lake by volume with just under 1,180 cubic miles of water, is the only Great Lake entirely within the United States. Approximately 118 miles wide and 307 miles long, Lake Michigan has more than 1,600 miles of shoreline. Averaging 279 feet in depth, the lake reaches 925 feet at its deepest point. The lake's northern tier is in the colder, less developed upper Great Lakes region, while its more temperate southern basin contains the Milwaukee and Chicago metropolitan areas. The drainage basin, approximately twice as large as the 22,300 square miles of surface water, includes portions of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Lake Michigan is hydrologically inseparable from Lake Huron, joined by the wide Straits of Mackinac

Lake Michigan beaches, especially those in Michigan and Northern Indiana, are known for their beauty. The region is often referred to as the "Third Coast" of the United States, after those of the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The sand is soft and off-white, known as "singing sands" because of the squeaking noise (caused by high quartz content) made when one walks across it. There are often high sand dunes covered in green beach grass and sand cherries, and the water is usually clear and cold (between 55 and 70 °F [13 and 21 °C]) [1], even in late summer. Lake Michigan beaches in Northern Michigan are the only place in the world, aside from a few inland lakes in that region, where one can find Petoskey stones, the state stone.
Lake Michigan, the second largest of the Great Lakes, is the only Great Lake entirely within the borders of the United States. Its name is derived from the Indian words "Michi-gama" meaning "large lake”. And it is large. It has a surface area of 22,300 square miles, making it the largest freshwater lake in the U.S. and the 5th largest lake in the world.

Today Lake Michigan is home to the nation’s third-largest population center and provides drinking water for over 10 million people
22,178 sq mi (57,441 sq km), 307 mi (494 km) long and 30 to 120 mi (48–193 km) wide, bordered by Mich., Ind., Ill., and Wis.; third largest of the Great Lakes and the only one entirely within the United States. Its surface is 581 ft (177 m) above sea level, and the lake is 923 ft (281 m) deep.
The world's largest freshwater dunes line the lakeshore.

sixth largest freshwater lake in the world.

Michigan is recognised for its thousands of acres of wooded forests and automobile industry, but most of all the pristine lakes in and around the state. Michigan was named after the lake to the west side of the state, Lake Michigan. The name was derived from the Indian words "Michi-gama" meaning "large lake" which it is. The lake is approximately 118 miles wide and 307 miles long with just under 1,180 cubic miles of water. Today the Lake Michigan provides fresh drinking water for over 10 million people. Lake Michigan is the worlds sixth largest freshwater lake and the second biggest lake in the United States, and the only great lake to lie completely in the country (the other lakes share shoreline with Canada). 22,178 square miles of water is lined by more than 1,600 miles of beautiful shoreline. The beaches lining the coast of the lake, especially in Northern Indiana and Michigan are often referred to as the "third coast" of the United States, after the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Surrounding Lake Michigan is over 1,600 miles of shoreline that is covered in either rich, dense forests or beautiful off white sand, known as singing sand for the squeaking noise it makes when stepped on, caused by the high quartz content. Lining the shore are the worlds largest freshwater dunes which provide a scenic landscape as well as a fun tourist attraction. Dune buggy rides are very popular with all ages, as is hiking, off-road driving, sand surfing, or just taking a tour and relaxing. All throughout the southern part of the lake, swimming, surfing, snorkling, water skiing and tubing are exciting water sports that people of all ages can enjoy. Sail boats, motor boats and jet skis are also incredibly common on the surf. Fishing for trout, salmon, perch, and a variety of other fish is another favorite activity.
